Real Steel (2011) – USA

“Charlie Kenton: What do you want from me?
Max Kenton: I want you to fight for me! That’s all I ever wanted!”

A wise person name – Johnny Wong once eluded this film as inspired by Chow Yun Fat’s classic father-son drama – All About Ah Long. Wise words indeed. Then again, Hugh Jackman hardly ever puts a foot wrong in terms of movie selections. Here, Jackman is at his best in this father-son drama disguised in a robotic “Rocky” boxing plotline. It is a movie that is filled with clichés and more clichés. If you seen Rocky and numerous underdog boxing movies, Red Steel is exactly that. Saying true and simple and with an extreme focus on the father-son relationship, Real Steel is ultimately touching, moving, teary and fun to watch. It is one of those movies that lifts you, inspire you despite its obvious flaws. On an end note – “let’s keep this as a secret”…
