I do not know where to start, except to simply announce disappointment in the latest fantasy action epic. Billed as the Chinese Lord of the Rings and falsely headlining superstar Jet Li as the main poster attraction, the film fails on all levels with the exception of being visually stunning at times. When the film uses magic to reduce the screen time of Jet Li to nothing more than an extended cameo, the result is an uncharismatic lead going to Charlie Heung’s son, Jacky Heung. Not only does he lacks the screen presence of Donnie Yen, his acting is more wooden than terrible and is hardly worthy of top billing. The subplot of Angelababy as a wooden puppet is a nice diversion, but she too is being killed off rather quickly. In fact, many stars in the film simply appears for one or two scenes, the result is an unenvaing ageing audience that cares nothing for the fate of its characters. Out of the pack, the villainous turn from Fan Bing Bing is perhaps the best thing out of the film. All in all, this is an action fantasy series opener that no one really asked to happen.
I rate it 2 out of 5.
